Tomboy Notes is a free cross-platform note-taking application that you can use for a variety of purposes: to manage personal information, write down your ideas and thoughts, keep a journal, create to-do lists, organize research projects, take class notes, and basically store any piece of text that you may need to have at hand. The program is flexible and offers a plethora of options for you to create and organize your information.
To start with, you can create an unlimited number of notes and, if you want, you can organize them into separate notebooks, by subject for example. One of the most interesting features of the application is that it can connect notes together by means of links, in a wiki style. Any word or string of words that you select in a text note can be a link that will connect your notes with others, so you can browse and organize the information the way you find most convenient.
The program interface consists of a resizable window with a toolbar where you will find options like undo/redo and text formatting (font size, bullets, bold, etc.). Additionally, you can insert URLs in your notes, which will let you open websites right from within the program.
All your existing notes and notebooks are displayed in the 'search all notes' window, which works as a note manager letting you delete notes or create new ones and organize them into notebooks. From this window you can also search for a specified word in all your notes and get the results almost instantly.
Additional features include support for hotkeys, synchronization of your notes with other computers, printing support, and the chance to install add-ins to extend the program functionality.
